Year 1 Learning Note 7.2.20

This week… In English we continued to look at our English book 'Anna Hibiscus' Song'. We worked hard in groups to retell the story and include all of the things that made Anna happy. We continued to think about the different things that make us happy. In maths, we focused on our number bonds to 20 including number bonds between 10 and 20 for example all the numbers that make 13.

During our topic lessons this week we continued to look at Africa. In Geography we looked at a map of Africa and identified key features of this continent. We also continued our work on weather and focused on the wind. We then made our own wind socks which we used during forest school. We were impressed that even a little wind made our wind socks fly so we were able to tell the direction of the wind. We also worked with scientific equipment to measure the speed of the wind.

Spelling & Homework

Over the next few weeks we will be ensuring we know our high frequency words so we are confident when writing. Please learn these spellings for next Friday.

Please keep reading regularly at home and practise your number bonds.

Reading

We are actively promoting reading for pleasure this year and would like the children to take the opportunity to read as much as possible. Research states that there is just as much to be gained from parents reading to children as there is from having children read to adults. So, if you get the chance to, then please try to read as a family.

We have just updated our reading books in class so it will be easy to change your book and choose a book that interests you. Remember you can change your book whenever you need to but please make sure you bring your reading record in every day for me to check and sign during guided reading.

This week we have been reading:

· Anna Hibiscus' Song (as part of our English work)

· The Magic Faraway Tree (Our class reading book)

Next week… In maths we will looking at 2D and 3D shapes and patterns. During the weekend see if you can spot any shapes. We would love to hear what shapes you spotted. In English, we will finish our work on Anna Hibiscus' song writing our own version of the story which includes the things that make us happy.

Have a lovely weekend.
